Re: 4" tubing and 18" Culvert material sourcing

MrHobbit,

I'm having trouble finding something to use for the 18" or so culvert that you suggested in this thread and subsequently to me. I called our local plumbing wholesale place and theirs runs $30/ft!

Could you suggest any alternatives?

Thanks,

I decided to talk to the horse's mouth... on the behalf of us all you DIY SHCS 'diggers' out there. I got in touch with a very fine and informative gentleman, Bill, representing ADS in the NW, but also speaking for the industry in general and the rest of their agents in North America. I imagine his ears are still burning from my grilling LOL.

Seriously, a good conversation covered all the bases. He was intrigued to see a new industry using his products (all news to him!?)... and was happy to hear what I was saying about all things SHCS (and the Sunny Johns too...)

It's my first effort to see about getting the SHCS builders on their short list.. and it looks like it's just a phone call away. No more wasting your time scrounging around construction yards and dealers and burnin' up cell time. They sell packages direct. (only - but hell, that's how we roll here anyway, no nickle and dimers fussing around for a few feet - we always want truck loads!)

From the Horse's Mouth:

This just off the phone with Bill at ADS's Oregon office 2010-03-22,

We talked about:

The Industry
    - ADS is not the only manufacturer, but are THE ones for ASTM certified goods should a project require certification/permiting
    - many non-ADS corp 'mom&pop' operations supply their local area with their own extruders using cheaper resins... they may say their product is ASTM material, c/w with stickers even, but it is only ASTM to the extent of the form factor, it does not have true ASTM certification, not tried, true and tested wrt to some of the more subtler factors that affect performance, defects, guarantees over decades, etc. They are cheaper by 4-5%, they are local and their delivery of product is typically FOB their location therefore only cheaper if you can drive there and pick it up or they can 'swing by' 'cause they are close. Generally, their product is OK for massive low budget rural drainage systems for fields etc, might have some quality control issues, but for SHCS air handling only systems, we wouldn't be too concerned. It you can find them, they are probably OK. Keep in mind that ADS systems for air air handling underground is NOT the same as ADS for water systems... with NO serious traffic after the install, B grade, maybe even F grade!, is just fine compared to waterproof sealed traffic proof systems ADS is specifically the company for.
    - ADS has a one call system in place for pricing and firm delivered quotes that include quantity breaks, discounts and other negotiable services depending on the size of the order. For your information a typical 96x25 greenhouse definitely qualifies for discounts below anything you'll find retail - and it's all delivered from an extensive manufacturing, wholesaling and distributing network - one call gets you a local rep who can get you a firm quote.

For all your SHCS builds, it's ADS 1-800-733-8523 for the West Coast and 1-800-733-7473 for the East Coast (but either number will direct you to your local rep no matter where you are)

PS: I do NOT have ANY connection with the company, no commissions, no inside line. It just happens that the only folks that have what we need are the only real national players and they are BIG... but the regions do compete with each other....

Ball Park Pricing you can expect from ADS by region:
(these are baseline starting points for orders, you will get quantity quotes that will likely discount these baselines)

Oregon and the NW:

    4" perforated
    - w/out sock - $0.45 to $0.46 ft
    - with sock +/- $0.20 ft
    - 18" Culvert $10 ft

California

    as much as 20% less

East

    less than California

And the good news... they've got a LEED certified 40% recycled line now too all at prices less than the regular stuff. Make sure you specify their MegaGreen product line.

Let me know how things go, use the poll
