Can you build a Sunny John that holds over 30 years of use?

This just in:

As to your question re: 30 year retention...

I believe that as detailed in the Sunny John Papers a standard design ideally handles a family of 4 for only a year before any vault maintenance is required.

There are some options in the design, however, they are only mentioned in the report in passing ... to wit:

You could use the vault as is, without barrels for containerizing the finished product

The rest would go something like this:

- just by adding some plumbed air channels over to the chimney vault through the separation wall. With a properly modified air manifold in the vault that draws over, through and then under the waste and then to the chimney, you could easily extend the vault maintenance cycle by at least a factor of 5, but potentially for 50 if you have a fit of unusual guidance come upon you...

The purpose to the wizardry with some plumbing items is to aerate the pile sufficient to remove ALL EXCESS moisture, but ONLY the EXCESS. It is not meant or effective at all to dry the pile out. A correct design necessarily requires a grated zone under the pile. This grated zone on the floor of the barrel vault must support the weight of at least a completely full pile without collapse (woven 1/4" to 3/8" stock iron "hardware cloth" perhaps) while permitting no material to be isolated more than 8"-10" from fresh air. The solid clear zone under the grate must be the last space the fresher air sees before entering the chimney rock vault. The design must have as close to zero penalty for loss of normal flow of air that an open vault normal provides. That flow should be able to be further amended easily with a taller 12" chimney and/or a 12" wind turbine. (that's all above the roof line work that can be done easily after the fact if your vault flow pattern ends up deficient)

I'd love to talk more about potential designs you could do. Is there any other means that appeal to you? I can do just about anything.... Skype audio/video, MAC iChat audio/video, Google Talk audio/video. But the best place to do any more typed conversations is at my Plain To Sea Forum .
